Week 23 in review: OnePlus Nord CE 5G official, WWDC kicks off

As we reach another week’s end it’s time to recap the major events from the past seven days.

Apple kicked off its Worldwide developer congress with a lengthy online keynote. The newly unveiled iOS 15 as well as iPadOS, tvOS and watchOS brought few major changes. And the MacBook Pro and M1X chip announcements that were tipped didn’t happen, despite later leaks showing the M1X tag in official Apple promo images.

Two months after we reviewed the nubia Red Magic 6 gaming flagship, its more mainstream sibling, the Red Magic 6R arrives in our office. Thanks to the retail box, we know the R stands for Racing while the phone significantly scaled back on the gaming aesthetics and adds a few upgrades targeted at the larger masses – a better selfie camera, depth sensor for portrait shots, and a much lighter and more compact body.

Weekly poll: the OnePlus Nord CE 5G is optimized for value for money, but do you want one?

The OnePlus Nord CE 5G is not a sequel but an offshoot of the original Nord. The letters stand for “Core Edition”, meaning that OnePlus distilled the mid-range Android experience, stripping out some features, adding back others, all to re-balance the value-for-money equation for a more positive outcome.

Design-wise the two Nords are very similar, though the CE is fractionally thinner and lighter. In fact, it’s the thinnest and lightest OnePlus phone since the 6T. Unfortunately, part of that comes from cuts to the bill of materials.

Weekly poll results: HarmonyOS shows early promise

People are optimistic about having a third smartphone OS on the market – last week’s poll shows that 2 in 3 voters think that Huawei’s new HarmonyOS looks promising. The new version of the OS is already in the hands of over 10 million users and the AppGallery boasts 134,000 apps they can choose from.

The most common criticism we heard was that HarmonyOS (at least on smartphones and tablets) is a fork of Android. That seems to be the case, though Huawei claims to have a significantly different architecture on the inside.

Huawei FreeBuds 4 review

The latest high-end TWS earbuds from Huawei are the FreeBuds 4 and they bring an iterative upgrade over 2019’s FreeBuds 3. Not to be confused with the recently launched FreeBuds 4i, the FreeBuds 4 feature open ear design with active noise cancellation which claims to filter out up to 25dB of surrounding noise. You also get the latest Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity and longer lasting battery life in a slightly more compact form factor compared to last year’s model.
